[Also in Group XIII] A water conditioner comprises a casing 23, Fig. 3, having a closed base and a detachable head-21 provided with an inlet 26 having a tube 27 discharging water into a filter shell 30 formed of moulded cellulosic fibres and holding water conditioning material in such a small quantity as to leave room for the accumulation of sludge; the shell 30 being spaced from the casing 23 so as to provide access of conditioned and filtered water to an outlet 28 carried by the head 21. The shell 30 which is formed of moulded paper pulp impregnated with resinous material has longitudinal corrugations 31, Fig. 4, and a top wall 32 apertured to provide a snug fit for the tube 27 and covered prior to use by a lid 40. The .conditioning material is confined in a fabric bag 36 and comprises softeners of the phosphate, borate, and polyamine carboxylic acid salt types, and ion exchange materials of the natural zeolite types and polystyrene, divinyl, benzene sulphonic, phenolic sulphonic and carboxylic resin types. It is mixed with corrosion inhibitors of the chromate, borate, nitrite, silicate and soluble oil types, including the borate, and mercaptobenzo thiazole types.
