Abstract

715,315. Lubricating. SEARLS, E. C. March 29, 1951 [March 31, 1950], No. 8117/50. Class 12(3) A gear box 3 comprises the combination of a rotatable casing 14, a driving shaft 1, a driven member 13, and a gear, wheel assembly 5-8 on the shaft so that the drive may be transmitted either to the rotatable casing 14 for idling or the member 13 for working. Oil dripping down the side of the casing 14 during rotation is directed by vanes 20 on to a thrower 19 which centrifuges the oil into a receiver 21 on the face of the flange 5, thus building up a supply of oil against the flange and feeding oil via ducts 22, 23 to the bearings 8 for circulation within the gear box. In order to supply oil to the gear box when forced lubrication is not used, a duct 25 allows oil to pass from the crank case to the gear case, an impeller 26 and a breathing device 27 being provided to promote the flow of oil laden air along the duct 25. In a modification the flange 5 is stepped to provide a recess in which sludge may be trapped. In Fig. 3 a scoop 30 passes oil down the duct 25 into a tubular member 31 having internal helical grooves 32, the member 31 driving the oil into ducts 33 in the sleeve 4. In order to remove surplus oil from the gear-box a duct 34 is provided in a helically grooved sleeve 15 and a further duct 36 is provided in the member 9. Oil then flows out through ducts 34, 35, and 36 on to the sleeve 31 and passes through the bearing 37 or a duct 29 to the crank case. In an alternative arrangement the sleeve 31 may be smooth, the helical grooves being formed in the shaft.
