Abstract

A detergent composition, suitable for washing and fulling textile materials such as wool, cotton, artificial silk and hemp, comprises (a) a condensation product of water-or alkali-soluble protein or protein degradation products with soap-forming carboxylic or sulphonic acids or with the corresponding acid chlorides and (b) an alkali metal salt of an alkyl benzene sulphonic acid. Proteins mentioned are casein, albumen and globulin, while the degradation products may be derived from such proteins and include albumoses, peptones, polypeptides, amino acids (but not individual amino acids which may be prepared synthetically) and the alkali metal salts of such materials. The soap-forming carboxylic or sulphonic acids are acids whose alkali metal salts have foaming, wetting and detergent properties in aqueous solution, and include saturated and unsaturated fatty acids and substitution derivatives thereof, resin acids, naphthenic acids and paraffin sulphonic acids. In the examples, p (1) an aqueous solution of the sodium salt of a condensation product formed by the action of soyabean oil fatty acid chloride on a polypeptide mixture (prepared by hydrolytic degradation of animal skin protein in the presence of lime at elevated temperature and pressure) is blended with an aqueous paste of the sodium salts of o-,p- and o-p-di-dodecyl benzene sulphonic acids; (2) an aqueous solution of a condensation product formed by the action of the chloride of a fatty acid mixture consisting of approximately equal parts of soyabean oil fatty acids, arachis oil fatty acids and olive oil fatty acids on the polypeptide mixture of (1) is blended with alkyl benzene sulphonic acid (prepared by condensing benzene with chlorinated C12-C18 paraffins and then sulphonating) and the blend is neutralized with caustic soda solution; (3) an aqueous solution of a condensation product formed by the action of palm oil fatty acid chloride on the salts of the polypeptide mixture of (1) in the presence of alkali is blended with the sodium salt of the alkyl benzene sulphonic acid of (2); and (4) an aqueous solution of a condensation product formed by the action of C8-C20 paraffin sulphonic acid chlorides on the salts of the polypeptide mixture of (1) in the presence of alkali is blended with an aqueous paste of the sodium salts of o-, p- and o-, pdi-dodecyl benzene sulphonic acids. Tests are described in which aqueous solutions containing the compositions of the examples together with sodium carbonate are used to wash woollen yarn or material, and compared with aqueous solutions containing only ingredient (a) or ingredient (b) of each of the compositions of the examples together with sodium carbonate.ALSO:A detergent composition, suitable for washing and fulling textile materials such as wool, cotton, artificial silk and hemp, comprises (a) a condensation product of water- or alkali-soluble protain or protein degradation products with soap-forming carboxylic or sulphonic acids or with the corresponding acid chlorides and (b) an alkali metal salt of an alkyl benzene sulphonic acid.
