Abstract

A nematicidal composition comprising an alkali metal azide or an acyl azide which in the pure state remains substantially unchanged at room temperature and which is of the general formula R-CO-N3 where R is a phenyl, phenoxymethyl or naphthyl group in admixture with a non-solvent carrier or diluent which does not cause or accelerate decomposition of the said acyl azides. The acyl azide may be a benzazide containing nitro, chloro or methoxy substituents in the meta or para position. Azides specified are sodium azide, benzazide, m- and p-nitrobenzazide, 3 : 5-dinitrobenzazide, p-chlorobenzazide, 2 : 4-dichlorobenzazide, p-methoxybenzazide, p-methylbenzazide and b -naphthazide. Diluents specified are Fullers earth gypsum, talc, china clay, anhydrite, sand and diatomaceous earth. Surface active agents specified are an octylated cresoethylene oxide condensate and a cetyl alcohol-ethylene oxide condensate. Fertilizers and soil improvers may also be employed. The compositions may be used jointly with an insecticide, for example d -benzene hexachloride or soil fumigant or a fungicide.
