Abstract
714,791. Luminescent materials. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS, Inc. March 6, 1952 [March 17, 1951], No. 5892/52. Class 39(1) A luminescent material, responsive to U.V. radiation of 2540A, consists of an alkaline-earth metal, preferably calcium, phosphate activated with germanium, at least part of the germanium being in the divalent state and the ratio of gramatoms of alkaline earth metal to gram-moles of phosphorous pentoxide being less than 3:1 and greater than 2:1, preferably between 2.96:1 and 2.7:1 inclusive. The germanium content is preferably between 0.002 and 0.20 inclusive gram-atoms per gram-mole of phosphorous pentoxide. The starting materials are fired in air at a temperature of about 2000‹F and are refired at a temperature of between 1700‹ and 2200‹F. preferably 2000‹F, in an atmosphere, preferably a mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen, which reduces at least part of the germanium to the divalent state. The hydrogen content of the refiring atmosphere is between 0.2 and 20 per cent, preferably between 0.5 and 5 per cent.
