Abstract
714,604. Rotary pumps. SECORD, L. C., and BOYD, W. Oct. 29, 1951 [Nov. 2, 1950], No. 25232/51. Class 110(2) Hydrogen peroxide is supplied to the main and auxiliary catalytic decomposers 23, 21, Fig. 1. by a pump 13 which if driven by an electric motor 14 energized by a battery 31. When a button 32 is pressed, a timer 36 is operated to close a switch 33 whereupon the motor is energized through a resistor 34. The hydrogen peroxide is fed through a check valve 17, a selector valve 19 and a line 20 to the auxiliary decomposer and the gases generated therein are fed to the main decomposer through the valve 19 and a line 22. A bimetallic strip 24a, responsive to the temperature within the auxiliary decomposer, actuates a controller 19a which closes a switch 35, thereby short circuiting the resistor 34, and moves the selector valve to a second position whereby the auxiliary decomposer is by-passed and the main decomposer supplied directly with fuel from the pump. The controller 19a is retained in the said second position by a control 25 which is responsive to the delivery pressure of the pump. A check valve 27 is coupled to the valve 17 so that when one valve is closed the other valve is opened. The valve 27 communicates with, a drain decomposer 29 and has a pressure-responsive valve 27a arranged in parallel with it. When the auxiliary decomposer is by-passed the residual gas generated therein is discharged through the valve 27a to the drain decomposer which also receives any leakage of fuel through the glands of the pump. After a predetermined time has elapsed, the circuit is broken whereupon the controller 19a returns to its initial position, the valve 17 closes and the valve 27 opens to allow the residual fuel to flow into the drain decomposer. In a modification, Fig. 4, the fuel system comprises an inlet valve 37. a drain valve 38, a pressure-operable valve 41 and an outlet valve 39; the valves 37, 38. 39 being electromagnetically controlled by the timer 36<SP>1</SP>. When the button 32<SP>1</SP> is depressed, the timer energizes the motor 14<SP>1</SP> as above and also energizes the electromagnets of the valves 37, 38 to open the former and close the latter. After a predetermined time has elapsed the timer closes the switch 35<SP>1</SP>, deenergizes the electromagnets of the valves 37, 38 and energizes the electromagnets of the valve 39 to close it, whereby the auxiliary decomposer 21<SP>1</SP> will be by-passed. Later on the timer serves to break the circuit thereby allowing the residual fuel to be drained.
