Abstract

An adhesive cement comprises a mixture of a brominated isoolefin-polyolefin interpolymer comprising a major proportion of the isoolefin and a volatile solvent therefor. Specified isoolefins are isobutylene, 3-methyl-butene-1, 4-methyl-pentene -1, 2-ethyl-butene-1 and 4-ethyl pentene 1, while the polyolefin may be butadiene-1,3,isoprene,2,4-dimethylbutadiene-1, 3, piperylene, 2-methyl-hexadiene-1, 5, dimethallyl, cyclo-pentadiene, 1-vinyl cyclobutene-2, dicyclopentadiene, dipentene, terpinenes, terpinolines, sylvestrene, 2-methyl hexadiene-1.3.5, myrcene, fulvene, cycloheptatriene, 6.6-vinyl methyl fulvene and 6.6-di-isopropenyl fulvene or many others. A third component such as styrene, chlorostyrenes, acrylyl or methacrylyl chloride may be present. Specified solvents are n-heptane, toluene, gasolene, and benzene. It is preferred that the amount of combined bromine is from 20-80 per cent. of that required for complete bromination. The bromination may be carried out by (1) passing gaseous bromine over finely-divided solid inter-polymer; (2) adding a solid brominating agent, e.g. N-bromosuccinimide to the interpolymer on a mixing mill; or (3) treating the interpolymer in solution or dispersion with the brominating agent in solution or dispersion. The adhesive cement may contain also carbon black, calcium silicate, or other reinforcing filler.
