714,482. Load handling appliances. HEUSER, A. Nov. 6, 1951 [Aug. 9, 1950], No. 19812/50. Classes 78 (3) and 78 (4) An industrial truck has a load carriage with stub length forks movable by means of a chain or cable over telescopic and tiltable guides and a retractable load gripping device for holding the load on the forks. A lifting truck, Fig. 1, has a carriage 6 with forks 14 supporting a bale and movable on telescopic and tiltable masts 3 and 4 by a hydraulic cylinder operating through chains, the bale being retained by retractable clamps 16. The carriage has a transverse shaft 21, Fig. 3, supporting a pair of clamps 18 on arms 19, the clamps being rotated to and from gripping position by operating a lever 23 on the mast 3 and connected to cables 24 which rotate a plate 26 attached to the end of the shaft 21. The shaft 21 is raised or lowered by operating two screw threaded rods 28 interconnected by a chain 31 by rotating a crank handle 29. In an alternative form, Fig. 10, a single clamp 18 is connected to the piston rod 42 of a ram and members 49 slide on guides 51 on the frame as the clamp is moved. A control 47 is mounted on the mast 3. The forks 14 are mounted to slide between guide members and each fork has a nut engaging a screwed shaft 33, rotated by a crank handle 36 to vary the distance between the forks. A single fork with a broad base may be used instead of a pair of forks. The forks are arranged to be rather less than half the length of the bale to ensure automatic tilting of the bale at discharge.
