Abstract

714,002. Walls, partitions. POCHIN, C. W. T. April 27, 1953 [May 17, 1952], No. 12531/52. Class 20 (4) Partitions, walls, &c., for buildings are built up from standardized interchangeable elements comprising a plurality of panels each having an outstanding peripheral rib and complementary mullions, sills, caps &c., having grooves to receive said ribs and adapted for connection together as a frame around said panels, the mullions having flat rear faces so that they can be assembled in back to back relation, and a groove in their front faces. Fig. 1 shows a partition which includes five sideby-side pane's A to E between two wal's 11, 12, the panels being of different forms to illustrate the adaptability of the invention. In practice any one partition would be made of uniform panels except where there is a door provided. Mullions 14, 15 having grooves 20, 21, are secured to blocks 13 plugged to the walls 11, 12, their joints being covered with counterstrips 16. Similar blocks 17 are secured to the ceiling to hold a capping strip 18 which has a groove 19 in its under face forming a continuation of grooves 20, 21. Strips 20 cover the joint between the blocks 17 and the capping strip 18. A sill 21 is supported on blocks 22 having a groove 23 in its top face, cover strips 24 in this case taking the form of mouldings. Each panel comprises a peripheral frame having a projecting rib on the outer edge, the upper and lower ribs 25, 26 fitting the respective grooves 19, 23, in the capping strip 18 and in the sill 21. At the ends of the partition the vertical ribs 27, 28 fit into the respective grooves 20, 21 in the mullions 14, 15. Between adjacent panels, e.g. A and B, two mullions 29, 30, screwed back to back, are dowelled into the si'l 21, or into the sill 21 and into the capping strip 18. the grooves 31, 32 in the mullions 29, 30, receiving the projecting ribs 33, 34, on the respective edges of the panels A, B. For convenience in assembling the final panel one, or two, of the mullions, e.g. the one secured to one of the side walls as at 15, has one side of its central groove 21 constituted by a detachable bead 35 which is placed in position after the final panel E has been erected. The panel A has a peripheral frame 36 and on both sides over its lower portion it has plywood boards 37, the remainder of the panel being formed of six lights 38 separated by transoms 39 and mullions 40. The panel b is of similar form, but has two large lights 41, 42, in the upper part. The central panel C has a small light 43 and below this the side mu'lions 44, 45, Fig. 2, are cut away to form rabbets 46, 47, for the reception of styles 48 of a door 49. The sill 21 is interrupted at the doorway. The panel D is plywood at the bottom and has lights 50-52 at the top, the panel E being entirely covered with plywood. The space between the panels may be filled with insulation material and the ribs or tongues, are preferably cut back from the corners. Where there is to be a cross partition the peripheral rib on the endmost panel enters the groove 56 on the side of a pair of back to back mullions. One, or more, of the pairs of back-to-back mullions has a side groove widened as at 53 to accommodate an electric conduit 54, the groove being covered by a strip 55.
