Application January. 9, 1941, Serial No. 373,840
3 Claims (Cl. 72-41) My invention relates to building blocks of the general type forming the subject matter of my U. S. Patent No. 2,174,875 dated October 3, 1939, and over which the instant invention is designed as an improvement.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide inexpensive, durable, hollow blocks for building a wall with heat and cold insulation F11 space and with concealed cement or mortar joints between the blocks.
Another object is to provide building blocks adapted for cementing to form concealed Joints,
and for rubbing in the joints to render the same tight.
To the accomplishment of the above and the subordinate objects, presently appearing, a preferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, set forth in detail in the succeeding description, and defined in the claims appended hereto.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a portion of a wall built of blocks constructed in accordance with the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is a view in perspective of one of the corner blocks,
Figure 3 is a similar view of another corner block,
Figure 4 is a view in longitudinal section,
Figure 5 is a view in vertical transverse section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4,
Figure 6 is a view in horizontal section taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 4, and
Figure 7 is a view in perspective of one of the side wall blocks.
in the block for circulation of air vertically through the wall. The side wall blocks 4 at one end thereof are rabbeted externally to form with the top 5 a key extension ll on said end'of the block and at the opposite end of the block the side walls 4 are internally rabbeted, as at II, and the top is set back, as at I2, so that adjoining side wall blocks I may be laid end to end with the key extension I. of one interfltting in one end of the other and the. tops and side walls fitting flush.
The side walls 4 of each side wall block I are rabbeted externally along the bottoms thereof to provide a pair of bottom tongues ll on said side wall, whereby said walls of one block I are adapted to fit flush on the tongues I of a subiacent side wall block with the tongues I3 thereof fitting in between the tongues I and thereby interlocking with the subjacent block against lateral play being freely slidable endwise along the subjacent blocks.
with a row of side wall blocks I laid end to end and keyed together, as above described, for instance, on a cement base It, mortar or cement, :represented at It in Figures 4 and 5, may be poured onto the tops 5 of the blocks of said row to substantially the level of the tongues I and beads I and another row laid on top of the base row and each block of the new row rubbed endwise in the cement, or mortar, to eiiect a tight conother. Each corner block 2, 3, is of rectangular Referring to the drawings by numerals, the
present invention comprehends side wall blocks I and comer blocks 2, 3, which. are designed to be laid end to end in staggered relation and may be of glass or other transparent material.
form with side walls I6, a top wall I1 and an end wall It, said blocks being open at their bottom and one end and the side walls and end wall, in each instance, extending above the top 40' wall II to provide upper edge tongues It on said made of any suitable material but are preferably p The side wall blocks I are rectagular and each slot 6 and of the said height as said tongues I. l
The head 8 andtongues I form a countersink, or well, in the top of the block I for holding mortar,
side walls, and also on the end wall I8 for a purpose similar to tongues 8, as will presently be apparent, the side and end walls It, I8, of each corner block 2, I, are externally rabbeted to provide bottom tongues 20 for fitting into a sub- :lacent corner block. One side wall IQ of block v2 from substantially the transverse center thereof to the end wall It is set back, as at 2I, or countersunk, and provided with a pair of vertical beads 22 so that the rabbeted end II of a side wall block I may be interfitted therewith and the bead it of said side wall It is provided with a gap 22 therein so that the tongues 20 of a corner block laid on top and crosswise thereof or cement, and the slot 6 provides an open top 56 may be keyed in said block 2 and fit flush on the top wall I! of the same across half of said top wall. At its open end the side walls I6 of the corner block 2 are internally rabbeted and the top wall I! set back just as in the case of the side wall blocks I to reccive the key extension III of a side wall block I laid adjacent said end of said block 2. As will be understood, thetongues I9 of corner block 2 provide for lnterfitting of one end of a side wall block I on the top of said block 2 against one side of a corner block laid across said block 2. Adjacent the open end of the corner block 2, the top wall I! is slotted, as at 24, and headed, as at 25, just as in the case of the side wall blocks I and for the same purpose. As will be understood, a corner block and a side wall block I laid on top of corner block 2 may both be rubbed into the mortar, or cement, on the top wall I! to form a tight concealed joint.
The other corner block 3 has one side wall I6 cut out, as at 26, to establish communication between the interior thereof and a side wall block I laid endwise against the same and said side wall is stepped, or rabbeted, vertically, as at 21, for fitting therein of the key extension ID of a side wall block I laid endwise to the same. Adjacent its closed end I8 the top wall II of corner block 3 is slotted, as at 28, and beaded, as at 29, for the same purpose as the slot and bead of side wall block I and slot 24 and head 25 of corner block 2. Otherwise, the corner block 3 is constructed in the same manner and for the same purpose as described with reference to corner block 2.
The foregoing will, it is believed, sufiice to imparta clear understanding of my invention without further explanation, since the manner in which the blocks are laid and the advantages thereof has been set forth in connection with the description of the construction of the same.
Manifestly the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
What I claim is:
1. A building block of the type to be laid in rows comprising an elongated body open at one end and the bottom thereof, respectively, and including a top and side walls, respectively, said top being slotted to permit air to pass vertically through the block, the side walls extending above said top to provide key tongues along the same and said top having a raised bead surrounding said slot of the same height as said key tongues and forming together with said tongues a depression in the top of the block extending around said bead to receive cement, said side walls being externally rabbeted along the bottom edges thereof to fit between and upon the key tongues of a correspondingly formed subjacent block, one end of said block having a key extension around the side walls and top thereof for fitting into one end of another block, the end of which is rabbeted to accommodate said key extension.
2. A building block of the type to be laid in rows comprising an elongated body open at one end and the bottom thereof, respectively, and including a top and side walls, respectively, said top being slotted to permit air to pass vertically through the block, the side walls extending above said top to provide key tongues along the same and said top having a raised bead surrounding said slot of the same height as said key tongues and forming together with said tongues a depression in the top of the block to receive cement, said side walls being externally rabbeted along the bottom edges thereof to fit between and upon the key tongues of a correspondingly formed subjacent block, one side wall of said block having a pair of transverse grooves therein for receiving an end extension of another mating block laid endwise against said side thereof, the key tongue of said one side wall having a gap therein to permit the rabbeted bottom edges of another correspondingly formed block laid crosswise thereon to fit flush on the top thereof.
3. A building block of the type to be laid in rows comprising an elongated body open at one end and the bottom thereof, respectively, and including a top and side walls, respectively, said top being slotted to permit air to pass vertically through the block, the side walls extending above said top to provide key tongues along the same and said top having a, raised head surrounding said slot of the same height as said key tongues and forming together with said tongues a depression in the top of the block to receive cement, said side walls being externally rabbeted along the bottom edges thereof to fit between and upon the key tongues of a correspondingly formed subjacent block, one side wall of said block having a pair of transverse grooves therein for receiving an end key extension of another mating block laid endwise against said side thereof, the key tongue of said one side wall having a gap therein to permit the rabbeted bottom edges of another correspondingly formed block laid crosswise thereon to fit flush on the top thereof, said one side wall being apertured to establish communication between the interior of said block aind said mating block laid endwise against said s de.
