Class 40 (8) A piezo-electric unit is built up from a number of layers of piezo-electric material arranged about the neutral axis of the flexure of the unit, and the thickness of the layers or the electric intensity across them is so arranged that, when energizing voltage is applied to the unit, each layer is caused to bend by the same amount as a corresponding layer of the same dimensions, but forming part of a homogenous crystal element, would be bent if the homogenous layer was subjected to an equivalent mechanical stress. The layers may be formed of ammonium dihydrogen phosphate or Rochelle salt or one unit may be formed from several different piezoelectric materials. Units constructed as above can be arranged to have impedances which could not be obtained with homogenous crystal units.
