Abstract
713,605. Electric condensers. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Aug. 19, 1952, No. 20787/52. Class 37. The manufacture of electrical condensers, particularly the wound or stack type, comprises the steps of coating a conductor with insulating material, dissolving any uncoated portions of the conductor, coating with a further layer of insulating material and cutting the double coated conductor lengthwise in two parts each having an uncoated edge for applying a connection. Foil from reel i is fed through a vapour degreaser 2, bath 3 of insulating material, such as a solution of "Araldite" (Registered Trade Mark), drier 5 where the coating may also be polymerized, to cutter 6 which removes the outside edges of the foil, and then through a bath 8 (which, if the foil is aluminium, may be sodium hydroxide) to dissolve the exposed metal. The action of bath 8 results in the exposed edges of the foil becoming slightly channelled. After passing through distilled water 10, and drying unit 11, a second insulating coating is applied by means of bath 12 which completely covers the channelled edges of the material. The double coated foil is then passed through drying unit I4, where polymerization may also be effected, to cutter 15 which divides the foil for winding on to reels 16 and 17. Fig 2d shows the treated foil ready for cutting along line 27, with the two insulating coatings 19 and 26. The two foils may be rolled together so that the uncoated edges appear on opposite sides enabling connections to be made to the foils by spraying the edges of the rolls. Alternatively one coated foil and an uncoated foil may be laid together to form a condenser. The resulting condenser may be impregnated and sealed with insulating material as described in Specifications 693,062 and 713,572. R.F. heating may be employed in the drying units as described in Specification 620,041, [Group XI], and infra-red or hot air drying may also be utilized. More than two. coatings may be provided. Specification 689,556 also is referred to.
