Class 7(2) In a two-stroke engine there is provided two oppositely disposed inlet passages 5 and 6 arranged at an angle of not more than 40 degrees to the longitudinal cylinder axis and a substantially flat - topped piston 9 which at B.D.C. partly closes the inlet ports 3 and 4; the engine may be scavenged by the air which enters the partially closed ports 3 and 4 being directed upwardly E along the cylinder walls and deflected by the cylinder head 2 so as to return towards the piston 9 in the form of a broad stream S. The inlet passages are also arranged obliquely and directed toward that part of the cylinder wall which is opposite the exhaust port 7; all the ports are of the same height. The passages 5 and 6 may be directed toward the centre of the cylinder. When the piston 9 is at B.D.C. the upper part 10, 11, covers at least a quarter and preferably a third of the height of the ports 3 and 4. The scavenging stream S forces the exhaust gases onto the piston which directs them through the exhaust port 7. Specificaticn 467,094 is referred to.
