Abstract
Hydrogen fluoride and boron trifluoride are separated from tolualdehyde-hydrogen fluoride-boron trifluoride compositions by evaporation in a continuous manner in the presence of an inert liquid. The compositions occur in the manufacture of tolualdehyde by reacting toluene and carbon monoxide in the presence of a hydrogen fluoride-boron trifluoride catalyst, for example as described in Specification 633,176, [Group IV (b)]. The composition is mixed with toluene or chlorobenzene and passed down a packed column fitted at the top with a reflux condenser and at the bottom with a boiler or a falling film evaporator. The evaporator may comprise an externally heated vertical tube lined with metal gauze down which the liquid flows as a film. Hydrogen fluoride and boron trifluoride pass out the top of the reflux condenser, while tolualdehyde mixed with the inert liquid is continuously removed from the evaporator. U.S.A. Specification 2,534,017 is referred to.
