Abstract

Aluminium chloride-containing gases, such as are obtained by the chlorination of aluminium-bearing raw materials, are absorbed by an aluminium chloride-containing mixture of at least two chlorides of the metals sodium, potassium, lithium, calcium and magnesium, and the melt obtained is treated with one or more chlorides of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals and magnesium, or a mixture thereof with aluminium chloride, which cause at suitable temperature the formation of two phases of different aluminium chloride content, the richer phase being separated for use in aluminium electrolysis. The phase poorer in aluminium chloride may be used for the initial absorption. The aluminium chloride-poor mixture from the electrolysis operation may be used in the step of separation into two layers. Two examples are furnished, indicating mixtures of (i) aluminium, potassium and lithium chlorides, and (ii) aluminium, potassium and magnesium chlorides in varying amounts.
