Abstract

712,958. Fluid friction brakes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 15, 1952 [Aug. 18, 1951], No. 20568/52. Class 103(1) A brake having as its object the substantially instantaneous stoppage of an electric motor comprises a vaned rotor 1 rotated within a liquid filled casing 4 by a toothed wheel 10 on a shaft 9 driven by the motor. The rotor 1 turns within a cylindrical sheath 6, also immersed in the liquid, which is closed at one end by its tooth gear end 2 and at the other end by the casing 4. The sheath 6 has cut through it slits 7 which are of such a size that when the electric motor is running at its normal operational speed, substantially all the water is driven out of the sheath 6, air entering through a pipe 8. Under these conditions the device absorbs very little energy. As soon as the speed of the electric motor falls slightly liquid re-enters the sheath and by its resistance rapidly brakes the motor. Silicone oil is given as suitable braking fluid.
