Abstract

In a process for enriching blue water gas (see Group XII) a gaseous mixture containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen, in a volumetric ratio of 1 : 3 is diffused from blue water-gas into a diluent gas in an apparatus comprising one or more porous diaphragms through which diffusion can occur. As shown in Fig. 1 blue water-gas is fed though an inlet 2 of a diffusion apparatus 1 into a space 3 surrounding a tubular porous diaphragm 4 which may be made of metal gauze. The diluent gas which may be steam or a mixture of methane and steam enters the diaphragm 4 in the direction shown and the velocities of the gases and the area and the permeability of the diaphragm are chosen so that the gaseous mixture leaving the apparatus to be catalytically reacted in a zone 7 contains carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the required ratio. To prevent counter-diffusion in the apparatus 1, the pressure in the space 3 is maintained in excess of the pressure within the tubular diaphragm 4. In a modified form of <PICT:0712689/III/1> apparatus the diffusion is carried out by causing the streams of blue water gas and diluent gas to travel through a tubular vessel in the same direction side by side in a condition of streamline flow so that diffusion takes place transversely of the direction of flow.
