[Also in Group XXXVIII] In a ship-borne echosounding system (see Group XXXVIII) having two selectively-operative oppositely-directed rotatable directional transmitters in which the magnetic heading of the transmitters is set manually by a control knob 10 and then maintained automatically by a gyro compass, the heading of the transmitters with respect to the fore-andaft line of the ship, i.e. the relative heading, is indicated on a fixed annular scale 35 by a double-ended pointer 33, 34, the two ends of which correspond to the two transmitters, the actual magnetic heading is indicated by the same pointer on the rotatable annular scale 37 controlled by the gyro motor 39 and a pointer 43 indicates the desired magnetic heading as set by the control knob 10. The heading indicators are combined with a recorder which may be of the type disclosed in Specifications 448,331 and 448,408, and comprising a disc 25 coaxial with the annular scales 35, 37 and supporting three styli 26 (one only shown) equally spaced around its periphery, the disc being driven by a motor 28 which also drives a roller, Fig. 3 (not shown), pulling down a band of chemically treated paper 29 over a flat platen 30 under the rim of disc 25. The range scale of the recorder may be varied by changing the gear ratio between the motor and the stylus and paper drives or by adjusting the speed of the motor As shown in Fig 2 the pointer 43, magnetic heading scale 37, double-ended pointer 33, 34 and stylus disc 25 are supported by coaxial shafts 41, 36, 32 and 27 respectively, and the two annular scales are coplanar, the ends of the pointer 33, 34 being stepped to project through the gap 38 between the scales.
