Abstract

712,526. Magneto-strictive transducers. KELVIN & HUGHES, Ltd. Feb. 28, 1952 [Feb. 28, 1951], No. 4923/51. Class 40 (4) [Also in Group XXXVIII] In a pulse echo system for locating objects under water comprising a rotatable directional electro-acoustic transducer, the echo signals being heterodyned to give an audio beat frequency indicative of relative movement of the object, the transducer comprises two selectively-operative oppositely-directed units resonant at different frequencies, e.g. 26 Kc/s and 14 Kc/s, for short and long range operation respectively; the pulse width and recurrence frequency may also be selected in accordance with range and means are described for varying the width and/or direction of the transducer directivity pattern in the vertical plane. Magneto-strictive transducer elements are described but piezo-electric elements may be employed. As shown the 14 Kc/s unit comprises a vertical array of seven elements 10-16 each comprising a horizontal stack of dumb-bell shaped vertical nickel laminations, Fig. 1 (not shown), each having a longitudinal slot 26 and two energizing windings 28, 29, the laminations being clamped to a frame 17 by clamps 30 near the central nodal region. The elements are. selectively energized in the following groups 10-16, 10-12 and 10-11 to produce vertical beam widths of 15 degrees, 30 degrees and 45 degrees, respectively, Fig. 6 (not shown). The 26 Kc/s unit comprises a similar array of eight elements 18-25 selectively energized in groups 20-25, 20-22. and 18-19, the top element 18 being outwardly displaced so that the 45 degree beam is directed downwards at an angle of 22¢ degrees. The inwardly directed faces of the transducer elements are separated by a sheet of rubber 36 between thin brass plates 37, 38 to prevent radiation therefrom and the leads from the energizing windings are taken to a junction box in a water-tight compartment, Fig. 1 and 2 (not shown), mounted on top of frame 17 and thence to slip rings mounted on a vertical pillar, Fig. 5 (not shown), about which the assembly is rotatable.' The whole assembly may be mounted in a dome as described in Specification 611,318, [Group XXXVIII].
