Abstract

Alkali metal phthalocyanines are made by reacting an alkali metal hydride with a solution of phthalonitrile in an alcohol. An inert organic diluent may also be present, and the hydride may be added as a suspension in an inert organic diluent. In examples (1) sodium hydride suspended in xylene is added to a mixture of xylene, phthalonitrile and amyl alcohol or butanol; (2) sodium hydride suspended in decalin is added to a mixture of decalin, phthalonitrile, and benzyl, cetyl, or octadecyl alcohol, and the product may be converted to metal-free phthalocyanine, e.g. according to Specification 708,040; (3) lithium hydride suspended in decalin is added to a mixture of decalin, phthalonitrile and benzyl alcohol. Other alcohols specified are dodecyl, phenylethyl, cyclohexyl, methyl cyclohexyl and propyl, alcohols. Other diluents specified are n-nonane, a petroleum fraction boiling 160-240 DEG C., naphthalene, tetralin, cymenes, dimethylaniline, quinoline, dibenzyl ether, anisole, phenetole, diphenyl oxide.
