Abstract

Mixtures of alkali metal and metal-free phthalocyanines are made by reacting a solution of a phthalonitrile in an alcohol with an alkali metal. An inert solvent may be present, and a small amount of sulphur or an equivalent amount of anhydrous sodium sulphide or hydrogen sulphide may advantageously be added before the addition of the alkali metal. In examples, (1) sodium is added to a mixture of phthalonitrile, benzyl alcohol and, as an inert diluent decalin, tetralin, dimethylaniline, quinoline, trichlorbenzene, or a -chlornaphthalene; (2) sodium or potasium is added to a mixture of phthalonitrile, decalin, sulphur, and benzyl alcohol, dodecyl alcohol, phenylethyl, cetyl, octadecyl or isooctyl alcohol; (3) lithium is added to a mixture of phthalonitrile, benzyl alcohol, and decalin, with and without sulphur. Other alcohols specified are cyclohexyl, amyl, propyl, and butyl. Other diluents specified are n-nonane, petroleum fractions boiling 160-240 DEG C., naphthalene, xylene, cymenes, dichlorbenzenes, ethylene glycol dibutyl ether, dibenzyl ether, anisole, phenetole, diphenyl oxide.
