Abstract

Ferrites having magnetic properties suitable for coil cores are produced by acting on the metals (the oxides of which form the ferrites) in suitable proportions with oxygen at the melting temperature, the heat necessary for melting the metals being supplied by the oxidation process itself. In a modification, only part of the metal constituent of the ferrites advantageously iron, is supplied in metallic form the remainder being supplied as oxide or carbonate, e.g. zinc oxide, pyrolusite. The metals to be melted wholly or in part, are preferably employed in comminuted form. The resulting oxides may be kept liquid at the end of the process by external, e.g. arc or resistance, heating. The melt is cooled, preferably in a current of oxygen, if desired whilst pouring into moulds. The solidified product may alternatively be pulverized, and cores pressed from the powder. The pressed cores may be sintered in oxygen at 900-1300 DEG C., and quenched in water. Examples descibe the production of nickel-zinc, and nickel-zinc-manganese ferrites, and reference is made to lead-copper, manganese-zinc, copper-zinc, magnesium-zinc, and cobalt ferrites. According to the examples, the charge is ignited by a short contact with a naked flame.
