Abstract

712,330. Electroplating apparatus. RIEDEL, A., and BACHMANN, F., [trading as RIEDEL & CO.]. Sept. 11, 1951, [Sept. 11, 1950; Jan. 5, 1951.] No. 21338/51. Class 41. Apparatus for the mass chromium-plating of metal parts or articles comprises an electrolyte container 12, Fig. i, the axial inclination of which is adjustable, within which is mounted an openwork basket 10 to receive the articles and serving as cathode connection thereto, the basket being inclinable with the container and rotatable relatively thereto. As shown the container has double walls through which cooling liquid is circulated. The basket 10 is rotated by a shaft 7 mounted in a flange 11 on the container 12 and driven through a worm 8 and worm wheel 9 from a mechanically driven shaft 2; the shaft is enclosed within a column, not shown, upstanding from the bottom of the container and extending above the electrolyte level to prevent access of liquid to the shaft bearing. The flange 11 together with the shaft ,7 and worm wheel 9 are mounted on a member 3 journalled on a stand and provided with a worm wheel segment 4 whereby it may be pivoted about the axis of the shaft 8 by means of a hand wheel 5 and worm 6. A worm conveyer 21 is mounted between the inner wall of the basket i and an inner cylinder ioa whereby on rotation of the basket in the appropriate direction on completion of the plating operation the articles are conveyed to the upper rim of the basket and fed into a sieve 22 to drain. The anode 28 is mounted adjustably within the basket 10 according to the amount of the work present therein; connection is made thereto by a bar 27 insulatedly fitted to the pivot member 3. Cathodic connection is made to the shaft 7 by a brush engaging a slip ring 26, and thence through a pipe 20 surrounding the column above referred to, to the basket 10. Electrolyte vapour is withdrawn by suction at 24. In a modification, Fig. 3, the basket driving shaft 32 is hollow and connection to the anode 34 is made through a bar 33 mounted in insulating bushes 30, 31 in the shaft; the shaft is surrounded in turn by the column 13 for preventing access of liquid to the bearings and by the pipe 20 conveying the cathode current.
