Abstract
In a method of concentrating solution by freezing the solvent the solution is circulated in a freezing space about an axis and an additional helical movement is imparted to the solution in each of a plurality of coaxial annular zones superimposed along the axis. The walls 3, 5 of a <PICT:0815008/III/1> <PICT:0815008/III/2> cylindrical vessel defining the freezing space are enclosed in a jacket 8 through which brine or a volatile refrigerant flows. A base 16 rotating on shaft 26 carries vertical arms 19 to which are fixed scrapers 18 and between which are supported stirring members 20, shaped so as to give the solution a helical movement, and 21, directing the solvent crystals back towards the vessel walls. The crystals move to the top of the tank and are removed by discharge from a ring 23 carried by the upper ends of arms 19 to a screwed portion 25 fixed to the cylinder cover 7, from where the crystals pass to a percolating device. Helical blades may be fixed to the vessel wall to assist the upward movement of the crystals. Weak solution is introduced at 29 and 30 and concentrated solution drawn off at 13. The vessel may rotate while the arms 19 are fixed or two coaxial sets of rotating arms may be provided with a fixed support for the members 20, 21. Solution enters the percolating device at 41 or by apertures 42 in a rotating hollow shaft 43. The crystals are raised by screw conveyer 37 to a mixing zone 38 and from there to a percolating zone 44 in which the crystals are largely separated from the solution to cells formed by vertical plates 46 fixed to the wall of cylinder 31. The crystals then pass to an emptying device 49 and are discharged through pipe 50. The percolator may be integrally combined with the freezing vessel by e.g. being located above the freezing space and in direct communication with it. The cylindrical vessel may be in a horizontal position.
