Abstract

712,168. Lubricating. UNION SPECIAL MACHINE CO. April 17, 1952 [April 18, 1951], No. 32664/53. Divided out of 712,147 [Group VII]. Class 12(3) [Also in GroupVII] In a sewing-machine having an oil reservoir or compartment with a duct leading from it through which oil flows to various parts of the machine, the duct has an orifice which is normally closed when the machine is idle by a valve element, such as a ball. which is displaced by vibration of the machine when in operation to allow free flow of oil through the orifice, so that the flow is automatically stopped when the machine is not in motion. The invention is described in application to a machine of the kind described in Specification, 712,147 arranged for closing the mouths of filled sacks, with the " base " and arm vertical and the " standard " horizontal. The reservoir 53 is attached at the upper end of the base, and is connected by a passage 57 with a manifold 58 from which pipes 53a lead to various parts of the machine. The passage is normally closed by a ball 55 in a cage 56 fixed over the passage, but when the machine is in action its vibration causes displacement of the ball to allow oil to flow through the passage. If only one pipe 53a is to be supplied, it is connected directly to the passage 57. One of the pipes communicates with a wick-filled bore opening into a bearing for the main shaft (which runs vertically in the base); the shaft is hollow and contains wicking to distribute oil from a radial bore within this bearing to other bearings and eccentrics. A helical groove in the lower end of the bearing opposes the downward flow of oil along the bearing.
