Abstract

712,138. Clothes drying apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 6, 1952 [Feb. 6, 1951], No. 3148/52. Class 34(2) In a clothes drying machine having a perforate rotary drum 40 enclosed by a casing 33, electric heating element 62, 63, cold water spray nozzles 98 and a pump 103 for withdrawing water from a sump 74 at the bottom of the casing, the air circulating in a closed circuit through the drum and casing and through the cold water spray to condense out evaporated moisture is impelled along its path solely by the motion of the drum and the clothes therein and the cold water spray is directed to have a component of motion in counterflow to that of the air in its neighbourhood. Water is supplied to nozzles 98 via a solenoid-controlled valve 93 and flow regulator and the spray is directed upwardly towards a baffle 75 having fins 100 which direct the water downwardly into the space between baffle 75 and a lower baffle 99, accumulated water draining into the sump 74 from which water, condensate and lint are drawn by the pump 103. The drying temperature is controlled by means of a thermostatic switch 30 and a hydrostatic switch 138 closes valve 93 if the pump 103 ceases to operate sufficiently to discharge water from the sump.
