Description

Patented Oct. 26, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE llmlllzll. rem oliva Kelsey, filmes, lv. Y.
Application Much ze, 19st, smal No. laaesl s claims (cl. 259-51) My invention relates to tumbler driers, and more especially to the fabric covered sheet metal members which are detachably secured to ribs on the oscillating or 'rotating cylinder.
T he custom has been to permanently secure the ribs to the cylinder and permanently secure the steel frame members to the ribs by rivets or like securing means, thereby consuming much time in removing and replacing the frames when repair or replacement is necessary.
The object of my invention is to provide an easily` attachable and detachable frame member which can be readily removed, repaired and replaced at a great saving of time andlabor.
In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a side view of the tumbler drier, Fig'. 2 is a side elevation, partly broken away to show the preferred form of the cylinder, ribs and fabric covered member in place,
Fig. 3 is .a side view, and Fig. 4 is an end view of the fabric covered member, and
Figs. 5 and 6 are side and end views of a modiiied form of the-fabric'covered member.
In the drawing, the numeral i designates a common and well known form of tumbler drier which is provided with a cylinder 2, having per- .manently fastened ribs 3, which act as supports for the fabric covered members l. The members I comprise a metallic frame work l ofsheetma.-l terial, such as steel or galvanized sheet iron.' covered. as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 with a durable fabric covering, such as canvas or duck. The. fabric may be secured to the frame I in any desired manner.. The slots shown in the frame in Fig. 3 enable stitching of the duck to hold it in place on the metallic frame i, when, the duck is: lapped over thefree endsl of the frame to a point at or above the slots, or thek lapped ends may be secured by gluing to the frame. The frame I' may 40 be padded as much or aslittle` as desireespecial'- ly at the rounded portions before the duck isl auplied. The frame is bent into a sllbstalntilsllyY U-shaped form, as shown in. FigsA andi?. in auch` a manner that its free ends are sumciently ilexible to be sprung apartv to pass over the: enlarged end 1a of the rib 3. The frame staysfilr plaeeidue to its form and friction having a clampingl action both at the enlarged rounded portions: and at the ends 1 and 8.
v30 Many other shapes` may be glued tothe frameiembersto neumerently shaped ribs'.A
The frame i' and covering 8" is substantially' the same astllat showlrat E and Si otlii'gs;y 3; amie',
and merely differs in shape to iit a differently shaped rib 3. and in this form the clamping action occurs at 'I' and I'. Some of the advantages of using a fabric cover on the frame are as follows:
It prevents waddlng or binding of the clothes 5 being dried in the tumbler', thus cutting down the time necessary to dry the ciothes and also cutting iown the time required to press, them after dry- It also cuts down the breakage of buttons and 10 `ribs requiring a frame such as that shown at l.
The frame I may be made of 4any desired sheety 20 material and the covering may be any suitable durable fabric.
I claim:
1. In a tumbler drier of the type described which is provided with a cylinder havingv internal 25 longitudinal ribs. the combination of'a substantially U-shaped frame having its free ends sufiiciently iiexible to spring over the ribs and be heldin place, and a fabric cover forI the frame.
2. In a tumbler drier of the type described 30 which is provided with a cylinder having internal longitudinal ribs onthe inside of. the cylinder. the combination of" a substantially' U-shaped frame having its freeends suilici'ently flexible to spring overthe ribs and be clamped in place, 35' *alll'l` a. fabric cover for the frame enveloping the outer surface of the frame..
3. A device as claimed in claiml 2, in which the ends of the. fabric: cover:l are lapped over the free endsl ofthe frame..
. 4. In atumbler'driel. of thetype described having a'. cylinder provided; with internal longitudinal ribs., ay substantiaily/y U=shaped frame covered with v a fabric'- andhavinm its; free endsl suiliciently iiexible: tspring. over ribs' andv be held in place. 40
