Abstract

711,997. Grinding turbine blades. MOTOR COMPONENTS (BIRMINGHAM), Ltd. April 14, 1953 [April 15, 1952], No. 9377/52. Class 60 A machine for forming the edges of turbine blades or for like purposes comprises an endless abrasive band e carried by rollers b, c and d, the roller b being the driving roller. The roller c is carried by a bracket 13 having an extension 14 slidably received in the machine frame a; the extension 14 has a recess 15 receiving the rounded end part 16 of a lever 17 pivoted to the frame at 19 and acted on by a screw 20 having a hand knob 21, so as to tension the belt. The blade is applied to the band e where it passes over the apical roller d. A pair of bearing housings f on the upper part of the bed and on opposite sides of the roller d carry vertically slidable bearings g supporting trunnions h of the work holder. The latter comprises a forked member having sides i carrying the trunnions h, and interconnected by an integaf end part k provided with an actuating handle m. One side member carries a spring-loaded plunger r having a conical end engaging a recess in one end of the workpiece j; the other side member carries a clamp for gripping a thickened rectangular end part of the workpiece, the clamp comprising a pivoted jaw s moved to closed position by a cam u actuated by a hand lever v and moved to open position by a spring w. Clamps may be provided on both side members. Each trunnion h carries a collar n resting on the periphery of an adjustable stop roller o which serves to determine the working position of the work holder. The collars are held in contact with the stop rollers by springs p acting on the trunnion bearings. Each collar may be of circular form or alternatively may be cam shaped so that during the forming operation any desired curvature can be imparted to the edge of the workpiece. On each side of the work holder is provided a peg 2 which by co-operation with an abutment 3 serves to lift the trunnion bearings in their housings when the handle m is depressed. One of the housings carries a catch lever 4 operable by a handle 5 at which by engagement with a peg 6 on the work holder serves to hold the' latter in its out-of-service position, the lever 4 being loaded by a spring 7. The extent to which the work holder can be rocked during the edge-forming operation is determined by contact of the pegs 2 with the abutments 3 and other similar abutments 11.
