[Also in Group XXIII] The welded joints of profiled rails are trimmed by a grinding-wheel or milling-cutter to a shape determined by the profile of the rail which is used as a template. The milling-cutter 44, Fig. 1, is carried in a box-type guard 53 on the end of an arm 45 pivotally connected by links 46, 47, to a ring 35, Fig. 3. The ring is rotatable, through an angle determined by a projection 41 and adjustable stops 42, on rollers 36 in a frame 30, which is mounted on wheels 31 on rails 32 and provided with a brake 33 for locking the machine in a desired position. A chain 37 is secured by its ends, one of which is adjustable by a screw to tension the chain, to the ring 35, and engages a sprocket 38 driven by a hand wheel 40 to rotate the ring at the same time as the tool 44, which is driven by a belt or chain 60, Fig. 1, and flexible shaft 61 from a motor 62, is reciprocated across the joint by a crank 49 and rod 48 driven by a chain 51 and electric motor 52. The arm 45 is urged by a spring or other means so that adjustable guides 54 on the guard 53 contact the rails on each side of the joint, and the tool trims the joint to the same profile as the rails. The arm 45 can be rocked on the link 46 to lift the tool and guides from the rails, by a flexible wire mechanism 58 actuating a member 56 and lever 57 associated with the link 47, which has an open-ended slot 55 to receive a pin on the arm. The excess weld-metal on the under surface of the rail can be removed by a tool 63, which is driven and mounted similarly to the tool 44, on a carriage 73. The tool can be traversed across the flat under surface of the rail, as it is reciprocated across the joint, by a lead-screw 74 rotated by a chain-drive 75 and hand wheel 78. The screw 74 and sprocket 38, which rotates the ring 35, may be driven through hand-operated clutches from an electric motor, so that either or both tools may be operated at one time. The upper and lower units may be separated to provide individual machines.
