Abstract

711,992. Stabilizing transmission lines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 21, 1952 [Feb. 28, 1951], No. 4618/52. Class 38(4) A stabilizing system for a long transmission line 7 connecting, say, a generator 1 to a synchronous motor 13 and which may include shunt capacitors 16, comprises shunt saturable reactors 18 having D.C. control windings fed over a full-wave rectifier 19 of the ignition type, the phase of the firing voltage of which is varied in accordance with deviation of line voltage to correct the devation. For this purpose, the rectified output of a magnetic amplifier 24, having opposed input windings 56, 57 energized, respectively, by a constant D.C. voltage and a D.C. voltage representative of the line voltage, is applied to the control windings 43 of a phase-shifting circuit 21, 20 as described in Specification 679,672, the output voltages from this circuit directly controlling the bridge 19. Negative feed-back may be provided to a winding 67 of the magnetic amplifier, as shown. In a modified arrangement the condensers 16 are energized from additional windings on the reactors 18. Specification 653,859 also is referred to.
