Abstract
711,940. Moulding processes mould materials ; making cores. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. July 14, 1952 [Sept. 3, 1951], No. 17757/52. Class 83 (1) . In a "lost-wax" moulding process in which cores, strainers or other refractory parts are embedded in the wax pattern, such parts are made of incompletely dehydrated ceramic paste so that further shrinkage occurs during the baking of the mould, thereby avoiding breakage of the latter due to differential expansion. A suitable material for the cores is 30 grams kaolin, 70 grams fireclay and 30 ccs. of a binder comprising 20 parts by volume of sodium silicate to 80 parts of water. After moulding to shape, the cores are dried or partially baked at 400-600‹ C. The mould which is to contain them is made from a mixture of sand, sodium silicate, water and a setting agent such as ammonium nitrate and is baked at between 800‹ and 900‹ C. prior to casting.
