711,712. Making milling-cutters; building up articles by spraying. DEUTSCHE EDELSTAHLWERKE AKT.-GES. Oct. 31; 1951 [May 7, 1949], No. 25480/51. Classes 83 (2), 83 (3) and 83 (4) In a process for producing a tool comprising plate-like cutting elements of hard metal carbides in a bonding metal, high speed steel &c., the elements are bonded to each other and/or to a carrier element forming part ot the tool by sprayed metal. In one embodiment, cutting plates 3 are assembled on a roughened face 2 of a shank 1 and metal 4, 5 sprayed to unite the plates 3 and shank 1. In a modification the plates may be fitted in recesses in a shank and metal is sprayed to fill the spaces remaining in the' recesses. In a further embodiment cutting elements may be arranged on a graphite support and metal is sprayed about them to form a unit, e.g. a disc or ring cutter such as a milling cutter which is removed, from the support and may, e.g., be soldered to a shank or may be used as a complete tool. The sprayed metal may be a 10-30 per cent copper-iron alloy or steel which may have added copper. Hardening may be effected after spraying. Spraying is by spray gun or by forcing solid metal against a rotating abrasive disc or by passing a solid metal through electrode rolls which melt the metal by arcing.
