Abstract

711.469. Automatic control systems. ELECTROACUSTIC GES. July 19, 1950 [July 19, 1949; March 30, 1950; May 12, 1950; June 12, 1950], No. 18052/50. Class 38(4) [Also in Group XXXVIII] In an underwater pulse-echo ranging system for indicating echoes from reflecting bodies within a selectable range increment (see Group XXXVIII) the range increment is displayed on the high-speed time base of a cathode-ray tube and the time interval between the transmission of a pulse and initiation of the time base is automatically controlled by the echo pulse so that the echo is displayed at a predetermined position on the time base. The transmitter is triggered periodically by a switch operated by a rotating cam disc, Fig. 3 (not shown), and the time base is initiated by the closure of a second switch whose angularly position around the periphery of the cam disc is controlled by the angular position of a disc 25 bearing two semi-circular contacts 23, 24 over which an arm 21 rotates synchronously with the cam disc. Contacts 23, 24 are connected to H.T. supplies and also via condensers 32, 33 to the coils of relays 30, 31 whose associated contacts 28, 29 are in series with the two field windings of a reversible D.C. motor 27 which drives disc 25. A received sonic echo pulse is converted into a corresponding electrical pulse by an electroaccoustic transducer 16 and applied to trigger a thyratron 17 whose anode is connected to the rotating arm 21. If an echo is received when arm 21 is contacting 23, condenser 32 is discharged and relay 30 operates causing disc 25 to rotate in one direction and similarly the disc is rotated in the opposite direction when arm 21 is contacting 24 so that the disc assumes an equilibrium condition such that arm 21 is intermediate between contacts 23, 24 at the time of echo reception, the angular position of the disc then indicating 'the range of the echo.
