Abstract

987,230. Recording-apparatus. ELECTROACUSTIC G.m.b.H. July 4, 1961 [July 4, 1960], No.24108/61. Heading G1J. [Also in Divisions G4 and H4] A sound pulse received from remote subaqueous sounding apparatus initiates the time base of an indicator. A water-tight housing 3 carried on a trawl net 2 encloses upwardly and downwardly transmitting/receiving transducers 9, 10 pulsed from a triggering source 14. The echo pulses are demodulated and remodulated on to frequencies # 4 , # 5 , and the triggering pulses modulate a frequency f 3 ; these sound transmissions are received on trawler 1 by transducers 8 which may be directed in azimuth and elevation. The apparatus in housing 3 is powered by an accumulator 24 charged from a generator 25 itself driven by propeller 27. On the trawler electro-chemical or spark discharge recorder stylusses 41, 43, Fig.6 are energized by rectified pulses from receiving transducers 31 (# 4 ) and 30 (# 5 ) respectively; they are carried by a band 39 driven from a motor 36 via an electromagnetic clutch 35 which is energized, by a thyratron 33 when the latter is fired by the triggering pulse received on frequency # 3 by transducer 29, and which is de-energized by camoperated switch 37. During each pulse-echo sounding period the stylusses move in opposite directions from the centre to the edges of the recording strip and then spring back to their initial positions. In a modified circuit arrangement for the transmissions from housing 3, demodulation is avoided by frequency-changing, Figs. 4 and 5 (neither shown). Cathode-ray tube displays may be provided. The housing 3 may have surfaces so controlled by servo-mechanisms fed with the echo-sounding results that it remains a fixed distance from the surface, or bed, of the sea; the circuits in the housing may be transistorised. The housing may be anchored to the sea bed, or be suspended from an anchored buoy, or be a self-propelled buoyant device.
