Abstract

711,418. Thermionic cathode constructions. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. June 27, 1952 [July 12, 1951], No. 16261/52. Class 39(1) A cathode for a magnetron comprises an element having a plurality of outwardly projecting parallel shield ribs, and a thermionic emitter mounted adjacent to one side of each of the ribs and spaced from them, the element serving to protect the emitters against back-bombardment by electrons. In the construction shown in elevation and section in Figs. 1 and 2, the shield element 10 is cylindrical and is provided with V-shaped grooves separated by ribs 12' which may be provided with extensions 57. In each groove is mounted an emitter 13, which may be a directly heated filament; the filaments 13 may be supported at the top end by T-shaped heads 15 fitting in slots 16 in a support member 17 insulated from the element 10; at the lower end the filaments may be tensioned by leaf springs 37. The inside of the element 10 is hollow and is connected to conduits inside the support 9 of the cathode so that cooling fluid may be circulated along the path shown by arrows in Fig. 1. The edges of the grooves preferably form angles of 30 and 60 degrees with a plane passing through the vertex and the centre of the element 10, the emitters being parallel to the sides forming angles of 30 degrees.
