Abstract

711,346. Printing. STRACHAN & HENSHAW, Ltd. March 3, 1952 [March 20, 1951], No. 6660/51. Class 100 (2) Inking-apparatus.-In inking-means comprising a pair of rollers in rolling contact and contrarotatable, and means for supplying a surplus of ink to the nip of the rollers whereby surplus ink flows towards the ends of the rollers where it is collected, scraper means are disposed at the ends of the rollers to scrape off surplus ink from the ends of the rollers. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, ink from a fountain 14 is forced up a pipe 15 by a pump 16 and supplied to a pipe 17, having a central orifice 18 and open ends 20, disposed centrally of a pair of contra-rotating inking-rollers 11, 12, whereby ink flowing from the orifice 18 builds up in the nip 13 of the rollers. Surplus ink from the nip 13 and the pipe ends 20 flows into shoots 19 which return it to the fountain 14. Each shoot is formed with a horizontal open end edge 23 disposed very close to the roller ends to act as a scraper to prevent accumulation of ink on the ends of the rollers. The pipe 17 may be provided with antisplash or guard fins along each side. One of the rollers may apply ink direct to the printing- cylinder, or to an intermediate roller in a train leading to the cylinder. One of the rollers 11, 12 may have a rubber surface, and the other a knurled or etched metal surface. In a modification, Fig. 7, the roller 12 is disposed vertically above the roller 11, and ink is fed from the pipe 17 to the side of the roller 12, as at 25, and carried to the nip 31 to build up at 32. A shoot 33 at each end of the pair of rollers has a vertical scraper edge 34 aligned with the axes of the rollers. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), ink is supplied to a pair of rollers to build up in the nip below the horizontal plane passing through their axes. Ink can, in any example, be supplied to the nip from sprays or other means.
