Abstract

711,185. Torsiographs. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D. March 17, 1953 [March 25, 1952], No. 7680/52. Class 40 (1). Torsional oscillations in a rotating shaft A' are measured by attaching thereto a phonic wheel A, the pick-up B of which produces a carrier current frequency modulated by the cyclic variations in shaft speed. This output is fed through a constant output amplifier D, a frequency discriminating network E, integrator F, and amplifier G to a cathode ray tube indicator H. The integrator is provided to compensate for errors introduced by the discriminator so that the indication is correct for both amplitude and frequency. The C.R.T. timebase is triggered by impulses produced once per cycle of operations which may be one or more revolutions, by the passage of a single rotating pole on or geared to the shaft past a pick-up C. Amplitude modulation of the carrier frequency is avoided by having the pick-up B designed to give an output independent of rotor speed, and by having 3 series connected pickups B spaced roughly 120 degrees apart around the rotating member and arranged to give in phase 'outputs so that. radial vibration of the shaft produces no change of amplitude in the resultant output.
