Abstract

825,009. Course recording apparatus. COMMUNICATIONS PATENTS Ltd. Feb. 21, 1956, No. 5376/56. Class 97(2) [Also in Group XXXVI] Apparatus for deriving polar co-ordinate data of a craft with respect to a reference. point comprises means to produce, in response to signals representing speed and compass heading, a first electrical signal representing the velocity of the craft directed along a radius vector from the reference point to the craft and a second signal representing the velocity of the craft in a direction at right angles to the radius vector, means to integrate the first signal to produce a further signal representing the range from the reference point and means to integrate the second signal divided by the range signal to produce a signal representing the bearing of the craft with respect to the reference point. In the apparatus shown # is the compass heading of the craft as received on a shaft 9 from the compass. # is the bearing, i.e. the angular polar co-ordinate, derived in a manner to be described and fed to a shaft 10. A differential 8 produces a rotation of the shaft 11 representing #-# which is used to rotate a potentiometer 7 fed with a voltage from an amplifier 6 energized by a signal representing the velocity V T of the craft. The potentiometer produces voltages VTCos(#-#) and V T Sin(#-#) representing components of the velocity along and perpendicular, respectively, to the line joining the craft to the co-ordinate origin. The radial component is fed to the velodyne integrator 15 to produce a rotation of the shaft 16 representing range. This rotates a potentiometer 18 and a leadscrew 5 which moves a nut 3 radially over a chart 4. The voltage representing the tangential component is applied to the potentiometer 18 which is arranged to produce an output proportional to the product of the component and the reciprocal of range. This represents the rate of change of bearing which is integrated in the velodyne integrator 20 to produce a rotation of the shaft 21 representing the bearing #.This rotation is fed to the differential 8 and to the chart 4.
