Abstract

711,059. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. May 15, 1952 [June 29, 1951], No. 15446/51. Addition to 693,919. Class 103(1) A disc brake for motor vehicles of a kind having features similar to those in the parent Specification and Specification 688,382 comprising a single disc 1 enclosed within a shrouding 16 and acted upon by friction pads forced against the disc by fluid pressure pistons and cylinders is characterized in that the shrouding 16 is made liquid tight and means are provided for circulating a cooling liquid around the disc or brake member. As shown in Fig. 6, the cooling liquid, preferably oil pumped by the normal lubricating pump of an engine, enters at an entry connection 21 and returns to the pump sump from an outlet 22. Circulation may, however, be of glycol or other similar liquid of high boiling point and low freezing point, which does not rust or injure the brake elements, by means of a pump operated by the transmission of the vehicle. As shown in Fig. 3, the housing is formed in two parts 14 and 15, sealing ring 20 which fluid tightly contacts the disc, preventing leakage radially. In a modified construction the housing 14, 15 is split diametrically instead of radially.
