Abstract

710,724. Respiratory appliances. SEELER. H. Dec. 10, 1951, No. 28858/51. Class 81(2) In a resuscitator device comprising a casing, the interior of which is in communication with a jet pump actuated by compressed gas and a diaphragm-controlled valve is associated therewith which determines the flow of gas to or from a face mask, adjustable biasing means are provided for the diaphragm which determines the degree of pressure and vacuum at which the valve opens and closes respectively. Air or gas entering through connection 26, Fig. 3, passes an adjustable needle valve 44 and enters a nozzle 30 to produce a stream flowing through a venturi tube 28 to atmosphere through a screen 39. The tube 28 has ports 32 and a butterfly valve 33 so that pressure or suction can be produced in the main body 1 acording to the position of the valve. The interior of the body communicates, through a connection 36, with a face mask and, assuming the valve 33 to be initially closed, the pressure built up therein is communicated through ports 9, Fig. 2, to a diaphragm 5 which is thereby urged towards the left until the rod 12, carried by it, snaps over the valve crank 34 by a toggle spring 35, thus opening the valve. Suction through the ports 32 now reduces the pressure in the body 1 and face mask until the diaphragm is drawn back and the valve again closed. Loading springs 14, 15 adjustable by individual knobs 19, are used to determine the suction or pressure necessary before changeover of the valve occurs. It is suggested that for normal purposes an air supply should be obtained from a turbine driven blower operated by suction from a water supply arid that an oxygen supply, through a reducing valve, should be conected into the supply pipe immediately upstream of the resuscitator body. The pneumatic pad around the face piece communicates through a one-way inlet valve with the interior of the mask so that the maximum pressure in the mask is maintained in the pad.
