Abstract
626,193. Anaesthetic apparatus. TALLEY, H. A. E., and TALLEY F. B. Aug. 7, 1947, Nos. 21609 and 28230. [Class 81(ii)] Anaesthetic apparatus for the mixing of gas and air which comprises a gas jet 3, a venturi-like tube 4, a conduit 2 leading to a face mask, an air inlet 14 leading to the tube 4, a valve 9 controlling a gas supply to the jet and a flexible diaphragm 13 influenced by the patient's respiration and adapted to open the gas control valve by means of a simple lever 11 during inhalation only, is characterized in that the lowered pressure caused by the passage of the gas through the jet and venturi-like tube is transmitted directly to the diaphragm in such a manner as to tend to retain the gas control valve open and thereby assist the patient's respiration. In operation, inhalation is transmitted through perforations in a double-walled tube 15 to the interior of a chamber 12, actuating the diaphragm 13 and lever 11 which opens the gas control valve against spring pressure. Flow of gas through the jet 3 produces a lowered pressure in the passage between the jet and the tube 4 and tends to retain the diaphragm in the operated position. In a modification (not shown) the air inlet valve 14 is replaced by a diaphragm-actuated valve spring- biased to a closed position and operated by the pressure of the gas in the passage leading to the jet 3.
