Abstract
A valve body (28) defines a chamber (65) having an inlet (72) connected to a gas supply and an outlet (29) connected to a face mask. The valve body supports a flexible diaphragm (40) connected by an adjustable lever mechanism (59, 118, 110) to a piston (95) so that the diaphragm opens the piston in response to a predetermined differential pressure across the diaphragm produced by inhalation and respiratory gas flows into the outlet (29) through a radially extending passage (92). The valve construction is such that the piston opens further in response to a suction force produced by the flow of gas past the piston and independent of the diaphragm actuation to provide for minimizing the inhalation effort by the individual regardless of the volume of gas demanded during inhalation. This is achieved by providing an axial passage (102) in the piston and also by a Venturi effect produced when gas flows through a curved section of the outlet (29). <IMAGE>
