Abstract

Granular polymers or copolymers of vinyl chloride are produced by polymerizing in an aqueous medium in the presence of an activating substance, an emulsifying agent, and a water-soluble calcium salt which does not cause substantial precipitation of the emulsifying agent, the calcium salt, preferably calcium chloride, being present in an amount such that the polymer neither coagulates into lumps nor is obtained to any substantial extent in the form of a stable dispersion and which amount does not exceed 0.14 per cent. calculated on the weight of the aqueous phase. Examples describe the preparation of polyvinyl chloride and of a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer. The activating substance may be hydrogen peroxide or a redox system such as hydrogen peroxide and sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate and the emulsifying agent may be an alkali metal or ammonium salt of an alkyl sulphonate or of an alkyl sulphonamido-acetic acid. A small amount of acetic acid may be added to render the solution neutral or very slightly acid.
