Abstract

Polyethylene is fluorinated by bringing fluorine or a mixture of fluorine with hydrogen fluoride or nitrogen into reaction with solid polyethylene which is in a laminar, filamentary, finely comminuted, pulverulent or other form having a large ratio of surface to volume and which is maintained in good thermal contact with a metal at a multiplicity of points distributed over the surface of the polyethylene or of the metal or of both, the metal being substantially inert to fluorine and to hydrogen fluoride under the conditions of the reaction which is carried out at a temperature of at least 20 DEG C. The metal may be copper, nickel or phosphorbronze which may be in the form of a gauze, a spongy sheet, "expanded metal," a layer or mat of metal turnings or a closely spaced series of wires or strips.
