710,434. Discharge devices. HANOVIA CHEMICAL & MANUFACTURING CO Oct. 10, 1951 [Dec. 14, 1950], No. 23602/51. Class 39(1) Method of manufacturing a vapour discharge device having an envelope 1 of quartz or U.V. light transmitting glass comprises forming an open-ended tubular extension 2 of quartz on the envelope and an exhausting and filling tube 6 on and intermediate the ends of the tubular extension 2, arranging in the extension 2 a lead-in conductor 3 for carrying an electrode and having beads 4 and 5<SP>1</SP> thereon, sealing the outer end 8 of the extension 2 around the bead 4, exhausting the envelope 1 and extension 2 through the tube 6, filling them with a rare gas such as argon, krypton or xenon and a small quantity of vaporizable metal such as mercury, closing the tube 6 at 7, sealing the inner end of the extension 2 around the bead 5 and removing the protruding end of the extension 2. The beads 4 and 5 may be of quartz or may comprise one or more transition glasses having graded expansion coefficients which are between those of quartz and the metal of the lead-in conductor 3. The beads 4 and 5 may be omitted and the lead-in conductor 3 may include a thin foil portion of molybdenum or tungsten.
