Abstract

710,393. Bending glass. LIBBEY-OWENS FORD GLASS CO. June 30, 1952 [July 5, 1951], No. 16359/52. Class 56 Apparatus for bending glass sheets to compound curvatures, particularly thin sheets for the lamellae of one-piece safety glass windscreens, comprises a stationary centre bed 22 and end portions 23, 24 pivotally connected thereto. The end portions are initially opened as shown and the glass 42 lightly laid thereon, appropriate positioning stops being provided. In this portion the assembly is counterbalanced by adjustable weights 68 acting through levers and links 65, 57, 58 with a synchronizing link 66. As the glass begins to soften the weights begin to close the end portions 23, 24 and this continues with progressively increasing force until the mould is fully closed. Heat shields 52 for the small ends of the sheets are provided. In a modification the movements of the two sets of weights are synchronized by racks and pinions.
