625,070. Bending and tempering glass sheets. PILKINGTON BROS., Ltd., BIRD, G. W. T., and DENNETT, J. Nov. 26, 1946, No. 35050. [Class 56] [Also in Group XXIX] Apparatus for bending and tempering sheet glass 1 heated to near its softening temperature has two sets of tempering structures each having means to shape the glass placed between the structures and being movable towards and away from each other respectively for the bending and quenching operations, the glass remaining in the same position for both operations. The construction of the nozzles and nozzle mountings and of the construction of the carriers and the means for imparting a circuitous movement to the carriers is substantially the same as that described in Specification 625,069, except that the nozzles may alternate with or be replaced by shapers of similar construction but with pads 19 apertured at 20 instead of the nozzles 31. Additionally the carriers are moved to and from the glass by means of the cylinders 11, piston rods 12, lever 17 pivoted at 18, links 16, and levers 13 which are. pivoted at 14 and connected to the shafts 10 so as to permit rotation of the shafts. Sprockets 43 permit axial movement of the shafts 10. The glass is supported between the carriers by tongs 51 which are suspended from a frame 53 movable on guides 54 by the balance weight 57 and cable 55. The carriers are first moved inwardly to shape the glass, and then moved outwardly and given a circuitous motion when jets from the nozzles temper the glass.
