Abstract

710,223. Sewing - machines. UNION SPECIAL MACHINE CO. June 3, 1952 [June 5, 1951], No. 13899/52. Class 112 Overhead sewing-machines, scale-pan type. An uncurler, for inwardly or outwardly curled work-edges, comprising two elements for yieldingly holding work against a centre plate, has a prong extending from the centre plate rearwardly beneath the work-engaging rims of the feed cups to a point rearward of the point of contact of the cups; a similar but shorter prong is preferably provided above the cup rims. These prongs avoid the need for hand-feeding the work into the grip of the cups. The stitch-finger and its mounting and the needle-guard are modified to improve the guiding of the work. In the form shown in Fig. 4, adapted for outwardly curled work-edges, the workclamping elements 77, formed with curlengaging scallops 82, are pivoted to the stem 70 on laterally-offset pins 74, and are pressed together by a compression spring between their finger-pieces 75; the centreplate 72, rigid with the stem 70, carries guide-pins 81 for the elements 77, and its prongs which serve to carry the toe portion of a stocking into the grip of the feedcups 22 are shown at 83, 84. The uncurler. stem 70 is adjustable in the line of feed at 69 on a hub 67 fixed to a hollow rockshaft 66 mounted in the lower end of a member 50 which is vertically slidable in guides 51 on the machine head under the action of a treadle- or knee-operated lever, so that the work can be raised for the formation of a deeper seam at the heel of the stocking; the member 50 is normally pressed downwards by a spring 53, and its movements are limited by nuts 54, 61, on a threaded stud projecting from the member 50, engaging a fixed lug 55, the normal position of the member being determined with the aid of a scale on the nut 54. The uncurler may be swung upwards about its pivot 66 to an inclined position for applying the work to it, or to a higher position for access to the stitch-forming devices. An uncurler for inwardly-curled edges is shown in Fig. 14 with one clamping member 77 broken away; the centre plate 95 is thicker than in the other form, with a plough-like toe 96 with a V-groove along its upper edge to receive the coils of the work, the groove having scalloped edges 97, and has a slot 105 in its rear edge with a similarly V-grooved lower edge to continue the uncurling action. The stitchfinger, shown in underneath view in Fig. 8, has a recess 88 to facilitate proper movement of the work-edges; in a modification the recess may be replaced by a groove extending to the underside of the finger. The stitch-finger is fixed to a member 41, Fig. 10, mounted on a bracket 34, 39, providing adjustment in three directions, so as to lie within the inner feed-cup; the edge of the member 41 is curved to the shape of the feed-cup and has a flange 43 projecting over the rim of the cup and bevelled or otherwise relieved on its upper edge, as at 43a, to clear the upper prong 84 of the centre-plate of the uncurler. A finger 44, with a notch 45 for the needle, extends rearwardly from the member 41.. The needle-guard, mounted within the outer feed-cup, has a similar relieved edge overlying the rim of the cup. A spring-pressed puller plate may be provided to hold the work against the outer feed cup to the rear of the stitching point to assist in the feed of the work. Specifications 397,332, 436,616 and 448,259 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,131,007, 2,292,762 and 2,448,774 are referred to.
