Abstract

709,696. Controlling boundary layer flow. GEIJERSTAM. E. O. E. AF. Nov. 5, 1952 [Nov. 9, 1951], No. 27909/52. Class 4 In order to reduce the resistance of air to forward motion a vehicle such as an automobile is provided with a chamber attached transversely across or built transversely into the vehicle top said chamber being open at its rear end and comprising a curved front wall, lateral walls and an upper wall, the rear portion of the upper wall being so curved that the height of the rearwardly directed opening of the chamber is less than the greatest height of the chamber, whereby air flowing rearwardly past the top of the chamber will, by ejector action, produce in the chamber a partial vacuum which deflects air toward the vehicle top behind the chamber. The vehicle roof 9 is formed with a chamber 7 comprising a curved lower wall 3, a steeply curved front wall 1, side walls 6 and a partial upper wall 4 which is curved downwardly at its rear edge 5 so that air flowing over the roof 9 will, by ejector action, draw air out of the chamber 7 and create a reduction in pressure over the rear part of the roof and delay the creation of eddies and a breakaway of the airflow.
