Abstract
<PICT:0709572/III/1> A method for the uniform and continuous coating of the circumferential surface of rollers, more especially printing rollers, wherein the body to be coated is arranged vertically in a receiver, the coating compound being forced into the receiver from below and afterwards drained therefrom, is characterised in that, before the compound is drained off, the drainage pipe of the receiver is closed by pinching together a flexible hose which forms part of the drainage pipe, and that for the purpose of draining off the compound the hose is released substantially instantaneously. A roller 2 is hung inside a cylindrical reservoir 1, jacketed by an annular cavity 3 containing liquid thermostatically maintained at a desired temperature. The roller is first surrounded by warm solvent such as water, which is then drained off and while the roller and receiver are still wet light-sensitive coating compound is forced into the reservoir 1 through a connecting socket 10 from a jacketed vessel 14 (thermostatically heated), by compressed air applied at a pipe 16. The compound is drained off, leaving a layer on the roller 2, by first tightly gripping an elastic hose 11, opening pipe 16 to the air, and suddenly releasing the hose 11. The height of a float 15, observed through a window in the tube, indicates the velocity of drainage, which depends on viscosity, and is adjustable from one operation to another, by replacing the hose 11 with another of different bore.
